Amazon or TikTok Shop First? Choosing Your First U.S. Channel

Brands entering the U.S. usually try to do both at once and end up doing neither well. The two channels demand different assets, different cash cycles and different daily work. Picking one for the first two quarters is almost always the better decision.

What each channel actually rewards

Amazon rewards a product that people already search for. Demand exists; your job is to be found, to convert, and to keep stock. It rewards operational discipline: catalogue accuracy, inventory forecasting, review velocity, advertising efficiency.

TikTok Shop rewards a product that can be demonstrated in fifteen seconds. There is no existing search demand to capture; you create it. It rewards content volume, creator relationships and speed of iteration.

If a shopper needs to see it work to want it, start with TikTok. If they already know they want the category and are choosing between brands, start with Amazon.

The cost structures are not comparable

On Amazon, plan for referral fees by category, fulfillment fees by size and weight, storage (which spikes in Q4), returns processing, and advertising that is effectively mandatory. Advertising as a percentage of revenue is usually the number that decides profitability, not the platform fees.

On TikTok Shop, plan for platform commission, creator commission on affiliate sales, sample costs, content production, and paid amplification of the content that performs. Creator samples and shipping are a real line item, not a rounding error.

Fee schedules on both platforms change regularly and vary by category. Confirm current rates on each platform before modelling.

Cash cycle matters more than fee percentage

Both channels tie up cash: inventory sitting in a fulfillment centre, payouts on a delay, returns arriving weeks later. For a brand importing from Türkiye, the full cycle from factory payment to platform payout can run four to six months. Model that first. A channel with better margin and a worse cash cycle can still be the wrong first move.

Operational readiness checklist

Before you open either channel:

  • U.S. inventory, in a U.S. warehouse, with realistic replenishment lead times
  • UPC/GTIN codes registered to your brand
  • Brand registry or equivalent brand protection
  • Compliant labeling and any required category documentation
  • A returns address and a policy you can actually execute
  • Product photography and video that meet platform specification

Missing any of these turns a launch into a suspension.

What a first quarter looks like on Amazon

  • Weeks 1-3: catalogue build, images, A+ content, keyword research
  • Weeks 4-6: inventory in, launch with a narrow advertising set on exact-match terms
  • Weeks 7-12: expand keywords that convert, cut the rest, build review volume through compliant follow-up

Success signals: a stable advertising cost of sale, organic rank moving on your two or three target terms, and a repeat purchase rate for consumables.

What a first quarter looks like on TikTok Shop

  • Weeks 1-3: shop setup, ten to twenty pieces of your own content, one clear demonstration angle
  • Weeks 4-6: seed thirty to fifty creators with samples and a clear affiliate rate
  • Weeks 7-12: identify the two or three videos that convert and put budget behind them; repeat the format, not the video

Success signals: a video that converts above the category norm, creators reordering samples, and a rising share of sales from creators you did not personally recruit.

Running both

Add the second channel when the first one has stable operations and predictable replenishment. Cross-channel effects are real — TikTok demand often lifts Amazon search volume for the same brand — but only after you have something worth searching for.

The honest test

Ask which claim you can prove in ninety days with the budget you have. If the answer is "people will buy this once they see it used," start where content lives. If the answer is "people are already buying this category and ours is better," start where the search is. Then give it two full quarters before you judge it.
